IdentificationA sandpiper with short yellowish legs, a long straight bill; dark grey above and pale to white below. It has a slight pale stripe over the eye. Holds its body hunched in a horizontal position as it jogs and darts along the waterline in search of smalmore...l invertebrates. Usually territorial and solitary. When disturbed usually flies in a low arc over the water calling "tu-tu-tu-tu-tu-tu".
Breeding Plumage: the entire pale underside becomes covered in a filigree of narrow, dark-grey bars and stripes. The bands under the tail are wider and very conspicuous.
Similar SpeciesGrey Plover basically indistinguishable in non-breeding plumage. Grey has "ku-ri-ri-ri-ri" and distinctive "too-weet" calls (vs "ku-ri-ri-ri-ri" only). In breeding plumage underside barring is absent on belly and undertail (vs complete).
